Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault Launches New Projects for Fieldwork Marfa

September 26, 2016 | By French Culture

Joint Project in Contemporary Art between the Nantes School of Art, the University of Houston School of Art and Geneva School of Art and Design

On September 23, 2016, at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York, French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, Jean-Marc Ayrault, delivered a speech to mark the launch of a new Artist-in-Residence program and joint Master’s Degree in Fine Arts as part of Fieldwork Marfa, an international program run by the French Nantes School of Art, in partnership with the University of Houston School of Art and Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD).

Following Minister Ayrault’s speech, Pierre-Jean Galdin, director of the School of Fine Arts of Nantes, presented the project, along with Jean-Pierre Greff, director of the HEAD of Geneva, and Rex Koontz, director of the University of Houston School of Art. Curator Jennifer Burris, a participant in the Fieldwork Marfa program, as well as artist Bruno Persat and architect Anthony Rio, shared their experiences working with Fieldwork Marfa.

Based in Marfa, Texas, the ambitious new Fieldwork Marfa program lies at the intersection of critical theory and contemporary art. It aims to formalize an innovative, contemporary space for learning in the visual arts and to provide a new context for artistic experimentation.

Drawing on Marfa’s minimalist legacy, facilities, and the multidisciplinary approach to education, Fieldwork Marfa seeks to provide a new generation of artists with the tools to practice their artistry outside the gallery space and engage with their environment, while critically reflecting on complex contemporary landscapes. Projects currently underway include an Artist-in-Residence program and a joint Master’s Degree in Fine Arts.
