La Fabrique des Humanités: A Translation Program in Humanities and Social Sciences

2017-2018 Workshops

The association ATLAS, which aims to promote literary translation, is launching a new program of one-week workshops, designed to enable young scholars to develop their skills in translation and to facilitate the flow of translations between English and French in philosophy, the humanities and social sciences.



Each workshop would bring together 10 participants:

-8 people per workshop, 4 participants translating from French into English and 4 from English into French
-2 translators-in-residence will run the workshops (one per direction)
-Prior to the workshop, participants will prepare texts to be discussed during the 5 days
-A 3-hour session will be devoted to each text. Problematic points will be discussed among the participants under the guidance of the translators-in-residence
-Participant will collaborate with colleagues translating in the opposite direction
-The workshop requires the active involvement of all attendees, in order to encourage exchanges.


-Promote networking among young French, British and American researchers, PhD and postdoctoral students, and freelance translators
-Enhance the translation skills of young researchers
-Give them key concepts and analytical tools to engage with the texts they are working on
-Offer a state-of-the-art overview of their respective research fields
-Foster connections between scientific journals and skilled translators

Candidates must submit an application including:

-An excerpt of about 5 pages (+/- 1500 words) of a translation in progress (book or article)
-Copy of the original
-An abstract of the book or article and a brief statement on thereasons why the text merits translation (+/- 500 words
-Cover letter


A fee of €500  (or dollar equivalent) per participant is required. Financial aid may be requested, i.e. if the applicant does not receive financial support from his/her university. These grants are limited in number and are need-based.

The Workshops are organized in collaboration with the EHESS – Paris / France in co-production with The University of Stirling (UK) and The Yale French Department with additional support from The Edward J. and Dorothy Clarke, the Kempf Memorial Fund and the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.

The association, ATLAS, provides residencies in translation, support for translators, organizes literary events and endeavours to raise awareness of the cultural impact of translation among the general public. An important part of its project is training and development.
